• Athony Dean-Harris – Downbeat Magazine

Harare, Zimbabwe-born, Toronto-based guitarist Matt Greenwood’s Atlas definitely has a good idea of what a hook is. It doesn’t take long into its 48-second intro, “Constellations,” where one is wanting more and is ready for the ride Greenwood is taking us. These smart compositions seem to know ex-actly where to start and stop.

  • Dan McClenaghan - All About Jazz

This music—with its start-to-finish cohesion of vision—sounds like world-building, with Greenwood painting spacey soundscapes via deftly-applied post-production machinations. A marvelous debut; a marvelous recording, period. Expect a great deal more from Matt Greenwood.

  • Ivan Rod

He simply adds some new dimensions to the Canadian jazz scene, which cannot be defined by genre or in any other way - limited, but which are precisely
    innovative and exciting.

  • David Reed – The Intelligencer

His guitar playing is fluid and inspired throughout. Highlights include Dehyah, Campfire Ghosts, Atlas, From Sunshine and Redemption.

  • Mike Gates – UK vibe

“Atlas” is a promising debut from Matt Greenwood. There are some lovely touches from the guitarist and it’ll be interesting to hear what comes next from this exciting musician.

  • Leonid Auskern – Jazz Quad

The fact that another thoughtful and serious musician has appeared on the Canadian jazz scene is beyond doubt.

  • Ron Schepper - Textura

For a debut, Atlas is preternaturally poised and a genuine compliment to Greenwood's talents as a writer, arranger, instrumentalist, and project leader. The record's so accomplished, it suggests there's nothing he can't do, which will make it especially interesting to see what he does next.

  • Sam Dickinson – The Whole Note

This album is an awesome offering of art for art’s sake, eschewing causes and
homages in favour of focused, sophisticated, contemporary playing. Have a listen; I
trust you will find Atlas as refreshing as I do.

With melody as the guiding star, guitarist and composer, Matt Greenwood, seeks to create cinematic musical landscapes where composition and improvisation intersect. Having grown up in Zimbabwe and moved to Canada in recent years, Matt’s music is inherently nomadic, pushing against the confines of genre and geography.

Growing up in Zimbabwe meant access to music education or even equipment was limited but the country’s rich musical heritage and culture was an incredible thing to be a part of. Here in Toronto, Matt still stays connected to the country’s music through the Mbira, a traditional African instrument, which Matt incorporates into his live performances.

Matt is now pursuing his passion for musical exploration in Toronto, having performed and recorded with legendary Zimbabwean artists including Oliver Mtukudzi, Gemma Griffiths, Forward Kwenda and Vee Mukarati as well some of Toronto’s finest such as Mark Kelso, Brian Dickinson and Mike Downes.

From early on in his musical development, Matt has had a passion for composing and has scored a number of short films including the award winning animated short ‘Blue Bird’ which featured at film festivals including Cinequest, Atlanta Film Festival, New York Film Festival and New Media Film Festival among others.

Matt's debut album Atlas was released in January 2023.
